What is Forest Bathing?
Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku (literally "forest bath"), is the practice of immersing oneself in the atmosphere of a forest to improve mental and physical well-being. Unlike hiking or exercise, it is a slow, mindful activity focused on engaging all five senses—sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch—to connect with nature. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Origins and History
Location: It started in Japan.
Timeframe: The term was coined in 1982 by Tomohide Akiyama, then the director of the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.
Initial Purpose: It was launched as a national health program to provide an "antidote" to high-stress, tech-boom lifestyles and to encourage citizens to value and protect the country's forests.
Cultural Roots: While the modern term is recent, the concept is inspired by ancient Shinto and Buddhist practices that revere nature's spiritual and healing qualities. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
